Summary:The polarized absorption spectra and intensities of trivalent erbium in sodium beta-doubleprime alumina (Er:SBA) were investigated between 355 nm and 850 nm. Both sigma ( E ⊥ c-axis) and pi ( E ∥ c-axis) polarized intensity parameters were obtained using a modified Judd-Ofelt phenomenological approach. By comparing the concentration dependence of intensity parameters observed in the current system with that observed in Nd:SBA, it is suggested that the observed absorption intensities are mainly contributed by those Er 3+ ions occupying sites which are less sensitive to the symmetry perturbation caused by the residual mobile Na + ions in the conduction plane of the doped crystal. The intensity measurements at different temperatures indicate that the vibronic contribution to the observed intensity is negligible in Er:SBA. An angular dependence of the intensity enhancement in the hypersensitive transitions was also observed.
