Summary:The authors report the case of a 64-year-old man with disseminated tuberculosis associated with severe CD4+ lymphocytopenia (55/mm 3) without HIV infection. The relationship between tuberculosis and CD4+ lymphocytopenia is discussed since: infections such as tuberculosis can be associated with a transient depression in CD4 counts; and, on the other hand, patients with an idiopathic CD4+ lymphocytopenia syndrome are susceptible to opportunistic infections, including disseminated tuberculosis.
