Summary:An analysis is provided of how the writers who told stories in the last third of the XIXth century faced the portrayal offered by linguistic reality. To be specific, the object of study can by summed up as follows: to examine the procedure followed by Jean Baptiste Daskonagerre, Jean Baptiste Elizanburu, Resurreccion Maria Azkue and Txomin Agirre when they published their novels or short stories, when the place they referred to in their stories was in the Basque Country or some other real place where several languages were heard or where a particular variant of the language was used. The analysis concludes that, although in some story creating an imaginary reference or a mimesis has an influence on the chosen linguistic option, in most cases the linguistic option depends on the internal requirements of the story related.
