Summary:Climate of long internal waves and resuspension on the coastal shelf is studied. The preliminary evidence presented of flow reversal occurring near the bottom under certain wave conditions, and the concurrent increase in the concentration of suspended particles, is consistent with the hypothesis that the onset of global instability is responsible for internal solitary waves (ISW)-mediated resuspension. It is suggested that ISW packets impose an alternating pressure gradient field, which is of reasonably large scale relative to the water column depth, and one whose strength increases quite strongly with wave amplitude. The results conclude that the ISW climate cycle on coastal shelves is likely to exert a pivotal influence on both the fate of pollutants and on biological processes in these regions.
