Summary: | Ecosystem functioning in the Neva Estuary, Baltic Sea, has been altered since the early 1900s due to anthropogenic stresses (e.g., storm surge barrier and wastewater treatment plant construction). Inadequate local water resources management in the St. Petersburg, Russia, region in the last 20 yr stimulated the development of a biological <'>plug' in the salt barrier zone of the inner estuary, which caused several changes: increased primary production (including algal blooms), a rise in the primary production:organic matter decomposition ratio, enhanced benthic-pelagic coupling, and intensive secondary pollution. Primary productivity is much higher than has been reported from other parts of the Gulf of Finland. |
