Summary:This article focuses on the Mexican historian Manuel Toussaint and his approach to art during the colonial period in South American. Starting from the study of several sources, we can observe the following key ideas: his role as an historian-traveler and his reading of baroque style beyond the New Spain model. At the same time, we stress on the impact of this experience regarding his intellectual ties and the strengthening as an expert into the mid-30s` historiographical context as well.
