Summary:The article addresses one of the methodological elements commonly declared in research projects: the retrospective or prospective nature of the studies. It is proposed to use as a classification criterion, to consider whether a study is of one type or the other, the relationship established between the moment in which the investigation is designed, on the one hand, and the moment of the occurrence of the fact that is pretends to investigate, on the other. Based on this criterion, it is based that both case-control studies and cohort studies can be carried out retrospectively or prospectively.
