Summary:The importance of a trained coach in the process that frames top-level competitive sport is important. The objective of this study was to identify the different dimensions from which coaches have built their disciplinary knowledge. Twenty-seven high-level coaches from the sports leagues of the department of Tolima participated in the study. With an average age of 46,48 ±13,78. The research was quantitative, observational, prospective, cross-sectional, descriptive. The questionnaire applied by Ibáñez (1996) and Feu, (2006) was adapted. The questionnaire passed a Delphi study submitted to the criteria of 5 experts, this questionnaire consists of 54 items grouped in 3 dimensions; "Academic training", "permanent training" and "sports experience" Inferential statistics was applied, bivariate analysis was carried out from the relationships found between the study variables, specifying how 36.8% of the coaches self-described academicist they reported having a rank as an international coach; evidencing a statistically significant association between the level and the coach's model, leading to the deduction that the academic model has a close relationship with a higher level. For the validation process of the instrument used, an exploratory factor analysis was carried out with which the different evaluation dimensions were determined. On the other hand, the Bartlett sphericity test verified the null hypothesis. Within the pedagogical characteristics of the coaches, the academic model prevails, highlighting how more than 50% of the coaches report having an academic level between technical and undergraduate.
