Summary:Systematics as a part of Biology has been through changes on concepts and methods during its history. Here I briefly resume this history and show the principal concepts for phylogenetic systematics as well as a study case including data from the snake genus Conopsis that indicate advantages and disadvantages of using morphological and molecular characters, as well as the analysis of separate or combined data and the taxonomic consequences derived from the results.
