Summary: | This article presents a statisticalmodeling of extreme depreciation of thenominal exchange rate of the Mexican pesoagainst the U.S. dollar from the validation of theassumption of the Non-Homogeneous PoissonProcess (nhpp) in the period 1990-2010.Empirical results show strong evidence thatfor increases in the monthly exchange rategreater than 2.0 per cent, the use of the nhppis suitable, but is not so for other levels ofincrease. In addition, using a function ofmean value of the PPNH Weibull type it wasfound that the probability of occurrence of adepreciation exceeding 2.0% in one month is33% and 67% for one quarter.
