Summary: | As soon as we look at the relationship between adjectives and derived nouns, we see that not all the semes of the adjective, not all the distinctive features of meaning, are necessarily found in the corresponding noun. Changes can occur when moving from one category to another. The best known example is that of dimensional adjectives, whose antonymy disappears in the substantivation. We know that the opposition wide/narrow is neutralised in width or high/low in height. A single term, the positive term width or height, covers the whole scale of quality, and the idea of above-average measurement disappears. One may then ask why this semantic restriction when moving from one category to the other. |
