Summary: | A winter 2019-2020 general strike opposing French pension system reforms did not translate into any real commitment to wider social conflict. This has raised a number of questions, leading to a group interview of five working- and middle-class women from the Greater Paris region, none of whom had taken part in industrial actions or public demonstrations. The issues they raised include the lack of clarity about what the reforms actually entailed; their sense of individual and collective powerlessness; and the indifference of the social categories considered responsible for many problems – ranging from a corrupt «political class» to refugee migrants and wage-earners who enjoy a privileged status. |
