Summary:Reviews the book, Hindsight: The promise and peril of looking backward by Mark Freeman (see record 2010-02078-000). The subtitle of the book, The promise and peril of looking backward, is really more about the promise than the peril of hindsight. After contrasting the power of now with the power of hindsight, Freeman concludes that there is ample room in the human condition to honor both. What he is after is the role of narrative inquiry in what can be seen as antipositivitism. The reviewer's conclusion on the value of Hindsight is that it may enrich our understanding of how the revisitation of our pasts can be a comfort but shows us really nothing on memory.
