Summary: | Femoral shaft fractures are normally caused by a high-energy impact and may be associated with multiple trauma. They are relatively common injuries. The management comprises two distinct stages:
•
initial treatment of the patient
•
definitive treatment of the femoral shaft fracture.
Femoral fractures can lead to systemic complications for the patient other than those related simply to the fracture itself.
It is extremely important to determine whether the fracture is open or closed, as this will determine immediate management. |
