Summary: | Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MC) is the most common malignant neoplasm of the salivary glands, with a higher prevalence among individuals aged 20 to 70 years. This study reports a rare presentation of a case of MC on the left buccal mucosa that mimicked a mucocele. The patient, female, 59 years old, feoderma, was referred for evaluation of an asymptomatic lesion of hardened, slow growth, bluish coloration, size 2.0 × 2.0 cm, with evolution time of 8 years. Complete blood count and coagulation were requested. The excisional biopsy was performed, and the diagnostic hypotheses were mucocele and salivary gland tumor. At the microscopic examination, malignant neoplasm of the salivary gland was revealed characterized by the proliferation of epidermoid-like cells forming large islands, as well as mucous cells delimiting cystic spaces, and in some of these spaces the presence of eosinophilic material was observed.
The final diagnosis was mucoepidermoid carcinoma, and the patient was referred to an oncology center. |
