Summary:Blue nevus is a benign melanocytic lesion of uncertain etiology and rarely may affect the oral cavity. This study describes a series of cases of blue nevus coming from different institutions. Data were analyzed regarding age, gender, anatomic location, fundamental lesion, color, clinical diagnosis, microscopy, and treatment. The results showed that the lesions appeared as brown to blackish colored macules. The mean age was 36.1 years old, and all patients were female. Regarding the anatomic localization, only the palate was reached. The clinical diagnosis ranged from amalgam tattoo to nevus lesion. Microscopically, the lesions showed accumulation of fusiform cells, often slender and with long cytoplasmic prolongation and loaded with pigment, as well as dendritic cells in the middle of the lamina propria. All lesions were submitted to surgical excision. It is important for dentists to know the differential diagnosis between melanocytic lesions and exogenous pigmentations, because early malignant melanocytic lesions may occur in the mouth.
