Summary:[...]it is very important to ensure a broad and effective genetic base of resistance to this disease, and it is of great importance to breed wheat cultivars with durable resistance to Pm to improve food security and livelihoods. Furthermore, some major Pm resistance genes, such as Pro12, Pm13, Pm21 and Pm1c, which can combat against different isolates of wheat powdery mildew, are also greatly attractive to wheat breeders. [...]it is expected that new cultivars with multi-pathogen and durable resistances could be developed by marker-assisted pyramiding of these genes. [...]some resistance genes, e.g., Pm^3, Pm16 and Pm20 derived from alien wheat species, are highly resistant to powdery mildew but are not widely used for wheat improvement due to linkage drag142-431. Wild wheat relatives include a large number of species and are highly resistant to wheat powdery mildew diseases134'411. [...]novel Pm resistance genes in wheat, transferred through hybridization between wheat and its relatives, can be identified by inoculating Pm isolates at the seedling and adult plant stages of wheat.
