Summary: | This article shows that, unlike adults, Carthaginian infants are accompanied with very few grave-goods, if any. These infants are also seldom found in the city’s cemeteries, but are over-represented within the Tophet, a temple of the city, which could be also indicative of their specific status, as is supported by various observations about the Semitic world and, above all, by the thousands of ex-votos erected in the Tophet above cremation urns filled with the ashes of infants. This raises the question of the role that the Carthaginians assigned to their deceased offspring in their relationship with the divine, and the relationship that they had with them as a result. |
