Summary:Opisthorchiasis is a parasitic disease which usually presents in countries where opisthorchis felineus is widespread due to the consumption of raw fish. Owing to population movements, this clinical entity can pose a challenge for the physician worldwide. We report the case of a 56-year-old patient with a recent history of opisthorchiasis, who presented with obstructive jaundice and cholangitis. Treatment with percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage and anti-helminthic drugs resulted in improvement of the patient’s clinical picture. Further investigation prompted by persistent anaemia revealed right colon cancer. The patient underwent right hemicolectomy and surgical drainage of the extrahepatic biliary system. The postoperative course was uneventful. The epidemiology, biology, clinical presentation, diagnostic workup and treatment of opisthorchiasis are reviewed.
