Abstract Background: Progression of any disease depends on several factors and one such factor is duration. To determine the progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), post-bronchodilator forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), and BMI, Obstruction, Dyspnea, Exercise (BODE) index are considered. We have tried to find a correlation between these factors and the duration of disease; to check how these factors fare as the disease progresses. Aims and Objectives: The aim of the study was to correlate COPD duration with post bronchodilator FEV1, FVC, and BODE index, respectively. Materials and Methods: A hospital-based and cross-sectional study was conducted at department of respiratory medicine, GCS Medical College, Hospital, and Research Centre, Ahmedabad, Gujarat among COPD patients. Informed consent was obtained from each patient. We analyzed 100 patients of COPD diagnosed by symptoms, presence of risk factors, and spirometry. Detailed clinical history, physical examination, and necessary investigations were conducted in all patients. Results: Out of which 71 were newly diagnosed cases while 29 were known cases of COPD. On correlating COPD duration with post-bronchodilator FEV1, FVC, and BODE index; we did not find any correlation between them. Conclusion: We would like to recommend a similar study with a larger population size to arrive at some form of conclusion.
AbstractList Materials and Methods: A hospital-based and cross-sectional study was conducted at department of respiratory medicine, GCS Medical College, Hospital, and Research Centre, Ahmedabad, Gujarat among COPD patients. [1] Based on large scale epidemiological studies such as BOLD and other, the estimated COPD cases globally were around 384 million in year 2010, that translates to global prevalence of about 11.7% (with 95% confidence interval [CI], 8.4-15.0%).^ Globally, mortality from COPD is three million annually. [...]our objective for this study is to check the impact of duration of COPD with various spirometry indices and composite index like BODE index. Above plot is the graphical representation of the same [Figure 4], On statistical analysis of our data, we did not find a significant correlation between FVC% with respect to duration of COPD.
