Summary:Fe 3 O 4 -γFe 2 O 3 intermediate films were investigated in terms of the microstructures which appeared in the crosssections of the films. The samples were prepared at the oxidation stage where the coercivity of the films rapidly increased. It was found that, in the intermediate films, there were two layers parallel with the surface of the substrates. This structure is newly recognized in this system using a high-resolution transmission electron micro-scope. Furthermore, it was found that Fe 3 O 4 and γFe 2 O 3 phases coexist in the intermediate films, and that there was a considerable difference in the structure of grain boundaries between those two phases.
