Summary:The College is a world leader in the development and provision of surgical skills. There is appropriate focus on technical skills training, particularly for trainees who have less opportunity for hands-on training than hitherto. however, an expertly performed operation may lead to disaster for a patient if he or she is not appropriately cared for peri-operatively. This responsibility is shared across the surgical team but out of hours it falls mainly on trainees. The recent RCS/Department of health report on the state of emergency surgical care in the UK, The Higher Risk General Surgical Patient, has highlighted the variability in outcomes and in the provision of emergency services nationwide.
