Summary: | Purpose:
To present of a case of polycythemia vera (PV) with spontaneous intraabdominal hematomas associated with arterial aneurysm formations.
Methods and Materials:
A 73-year-old man was admitted to the hospital suffering from epigastric abdominal discomfort. Ultrasonography (US) and multidetector computerized tomography (MDCT) examinations were performed. MDCT angiography images were obtained
Results:
US examination revealed 8×8cm and 4.5×4cm sized hematomas in the subhepatic area. Doppler US examination showed aneurysmatic filling in the smaller one. CT examination confirmed the hematoma formations and MDCT angiography showed the vascular aneurysm formations arising from a branch of left gastric artery.
Conclusions:
Hemorrhage in PV usually presents as ecchymosis, gastrointestinal bleeding, or epistaxis. Mainly, abdominal wall and retroperitoneal hematomas occur in PV. To our knowledge, intraabdominal hematomas as an hemorrhagic complication of PV have not yet been reported before. |
