Attitude of Pre-university students towards Nursing profession in selected PU Colleges, Mangaluru

Introduction: Nursing is a noble profession. There are about 27 million nurses worldwide, both male and female and 6 million more medical assistants are required worldwide. Nurses were in considerable demand during the COVID19 pandemic because they played important roles and had responsibilities. The public perception about nursing is a controversial subject. Therefore, nursing is viewed by the general public as an adjunct position that supports physician and hospital partnerships. Aim: The study was conducted, to assess the attitude of pre-university students towards the nursing profession and to find the association between attitude and the selected baseline variables of pre-university students. Methodology: The descriptive research design was used to carry out the study. The study was conducted on 362 Pre- university students. The non-probability purposive sampling technique was used to choose the samples. Before the data collection students and parents gave their informed consent. A structured attitude questionnaire was used to obtain the data. With the aid of descriptive and inferential statistics, the complied data was examined in terms of objective and hypothesis. Results: According to the study's findings,294 (81%) students had a favourable attitude, 68 (19%) students had moderately favorable attitude and none had unfavourable attitude towards nursing profession. Mean score of attitudes towards nursing profession interpreted as 88.0, standard deviation 8.4 and median 89. With the exception of any relatives in nursing profession (0.042) and their stream (0.001), there is no association between attitude and the baseline variables. Conclusion: According to the findings of the current study, the majority of the students had favorable attitude towards nursing profession and educational program should be carried out in order to improve the student's attitude towards nursing profession.
