Summary:Calves were fed milk replacer (20% all-milk protein, 20% fat; Land O'Lakes Animal Milk Products Co., Arden Hills, MN) at a rate of 10% of arrival BW twice per day for the duration of the trial. To ensure that calves consumed the treatment grain at the desired rate, from d 2 calves were handfed the treatment feed if they did not voluntarily consume it within 1 h. Grain and milk intake, fecal scores, and health were monitored daily using a previously described system (Lesmeister and Heinrichs, 2004).
