Highlights • Structural equation modeling can illuminate intermediation paths between socioeconomic and health status. • Socioeconomic status showed no direct determinants of health status. • Good physical activity habits and independence in ADL, which were related with high socioeconomic status, influence health considerably. • Good physical activity level and independence in ADL, prior to a good socioeconomic status, can help to improve health status in elderly people.
