Summary:Reviews the book, Expertise in Counseling and Psychotherapy: Master Therapist Studies From Around the World edited by Len Jennings and Thomas M. Skovholt (see record 2017-11937-000). This 294-page book contains eight chapters examining psychotherapeutic expertise in seven different countries, along with a consolidation of these findings using qualitative meta-analysis (QMA). The editors have brought together 18 contributors whose expertise, range of experience, and differing cultural perspectives speak to the global aims of this ambitious body of work. The qualitative methodology used, along with the peer nomination process modeled after Jennings and Skovolt’s original 1999 study (provided in the appendix of this book), offers an international perspective that has not been previously accessed by those researching psychotherapeutic expertise. This text is a valuable resource for practitioners seeking routes of improvement, researchers hoping to tackle the controversial topic of counseling expertise, supervisors and clinical trainers searching for ways to encourage therapeutic growth and expertise, and, perhaps most significantly, for therapists-in-training desiring insight into what master therapists say they think and do.
