Summary:Reviews the book, When I'm 64 edited by Laura L. Carstensen and Christine R. Hartel (see record 2006-10620-000). The U.S. government is not only aware of the rapidly aging population but has undertaken some important steps in soliciting information about which of the myriad possible research topics to target in an effort to improve the well-being of older adults in the country. Central to this endeavor was a move by the Behavior and Social Research Program of the National Institute on Aging to commission a special group--the Committee on Aging Frontiers in Social Psychology, Personality, and Adult Developmental Psychology--to identify promising areas of research on aging. The goal of the report developed by the committee is to contribute to a long-term research agenda designed to improve the health, well-being, and interconnectedness of older adults. The book documenting their findings and evidence, When I'm 64, provides clear and engaging coverage detailing the committee's recommendations and process, as well as supporting background papers. Taken together, the result is a forward-thinking text that provides cutting-edge, aspirational ideas for future research on aging, with the overarching goal of using basic research to solve social problems and result in practical improvement in the lives of older adults. All in all, from its thoughtful global recommendations to its scientifically grounded and provocative background papers, this book is highly recommended for forward-thinking students and professionals from every discipline who wish to contribute to an enriched understanding of older adults of today and tomorrow.
