Rice planthopper, one of the most serious pests in rice production, had threatened seriously grain production security in China. The present study was conducted to review similarities and differences of interactions between rice and two species of planthoppers viz., brown planthopper(Nilaparvata lugens Stal; BPH) and white-backed planthopper (Sogatella fureifera Horveth, WBPH), respectively. The research contents included differences in protease level, amino acid types, physiological resistance mechanism and resistant gene identification, Moreover, the relevant research progresses were introduced, including map-based clone of major resistant genes to rice planthopper, molecular resistance mechanism, mapping and cloning of brown planthoppers' virulent genes, and genome sequencing. Based on achieved research progresses, it suggested that it should strength molecular biological studies of rice white-backed planthopper, so as to provide reference for controling pests effectivity.
