Summary:Reviews the book, Mainstreaming of Children in Schools: Research and Programmatic Issues by Phillip S. Strain and Mary Margaret Kerr (1981). Strain and Kerr preface their text by impressing the reader with their strong bias for an empirical orientation to the topic of mainstreaming. Mainstreaming of Children in Schools contains some valuable material for professional workers interested in selected aspects of the issue of mainstreaming handicapped children. However, this reviewer is unconvinced that the text significamtly advances our understanding of the empirical basis for mainstreaming. Mainstreaming of children with handicaps other than mental retardation, and the failure to thoroughly evaluate major programmatic models related to mainstreaming (i.e., resource rooms) constitute the major limitations oi this volume.
