Summary:Reviews the books, The Shaping of Personality: Conflict, Choice, and Growth by Frank Barron (1979) and Personality. 3rd ed by Richard S. Lazarus and Alan Monat (1979). Barron presents his text as a "humanistic way of looking" at ourselves and as an attempt to abet the development of personality toward greater humanness. The structure and content of the text make it difficult to summarize or review fairly in the brief space available. Structurally, the book is complex, if not vertiginous. The book's title suggests that it might be oriented around conflict, choice, and growth. Lazarus and Monat have written book on personality determinants and personality development. Overall, this book would serve admirably in a course in which one wanted to introduce students to mainline personality theories and issues.
