Summary:UF6 behaves as an oxidizer but also as a fluorinating agent of a large panel of organic substrates: olefins, alcohols, aldehydes, thioketals, acids, diacids, (trichloromethyl)arenes. •Large worldwide production of depleted UF6.•Valuable use of UF6 in chemistry.•Large survey of reactivity toward various organic functions.•UF6 can be an oxidizer and/or a fluorinating reagent. The annual worldwide production of UF6 is very large and this compound is not used. Consequently, it could be interesting to find some applications as organic reagent. UF6 could be considered as an oxidizer of various functions. However, it seems also present some possibilities as a fluorinating reagent in mild conditions.
