Summary:Reviews the book, Handbook of Special Education: Research and Practice, Vol. 1. Learner Characteristics and Adaptive Education edited by Margaret C. Wang, Maynard C. Reynolds, and Herbert J. Walberg (1987). This volume of the Handbook is organized into five-chapter sections: Learning Characteristics of Handicapped Students and the Provision of Effective Education, Effectiveness of Differential Programming in Serving Handicapped Students, and Noncategorical Programming for Mildly Handicapped Students. This volume is both comprehensive and balanced in terms of writing style and depth and breadth of coverage. Although several noteworthy meta-analyses and integrative reviews are synthesized in the Handbook, each of the chapters represents a traditional qualitative review of the literature.
