An empirical puzzle: Falling migration and growing unemployment differentials among Italian regions

We investigate the causes behind the low and falling mobility levels in (Southern) Italy. We argue that a combination of demographic factors, high mobility costs and inefficiencies in the job matching process may account for the fall in interregional migration.
