Highlights ► Steroid hormones can influence brain development during sensitive periods of life. ► Recent research has shown that the adolescent brain is sensitive to steroid hormones. ► We review the evidence that adolescent stress exposure impacts brain development. ► The effects of adolescent stress exposure are reviewed in both mammals and birds. ► Adolescent stress has long-term impacts upon behavioural and cognitive profiles.
