Summary:The family of Dunn and Sanchez recently visited southern Arizona, 16 kilometers from the border with Mexico. While there, they began to ponder an unusual flavor, that of mammoth meat. The flavor of mammoth meat doesn't seem as though it is particularly relevant to daily life in Arizona or anywhere else. But it is. Mammoth meat is an emblem of the flavors they have loved to oblivion. They were staying in Patagonia, an old mining town. In the mountains that ring Patagonia live hundreds of species of birds, but also jaguars, black bears, and bighorn sheep. One day, Rob decided to walk down Sonoita Creek with our son. The creek is in some places above ground, some places below. They walked the dry bed, beneath which flowed the living creek. As they walked, they saw the tracks of collared peccaries, both their hoofprints and the spots where these wild pigs had sniffed, nosed, and unearthed some delicacv buried just under the surface of the dry bed. They heard the calls of Chihuahuan ravens and found the musty warren of a fox.
