Summary: | Juvenile white shrimps (Penaeus setiferus) were exposed to cadmium and zinc chloride solutions at different salinities, pH 8.3 and 23C with adequate dissolved oxygen concentrations. Metals were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. The 96-h median lethal concentrations for cadmium and zinc separately were 0.99 and 43.87 mg per litre, respectively; similar values were obtained over 48 h. A toxicity ratio was defined as the cadmium concentration:the 96-h LC50 compared with the same expression for zinc concentrations. Cadmium in combination with zinc increased toxicity 4-6 times as the toxicity ratio increased. Similarly, zinc toxicity was 5-7 times greater than its LC50 for a toxicity ratio of 1, rising further as the latter increased. Combinations of these metals thus exhibited synergism whose extent depended on the ratios of the metals in the mixtures. |
