Summary:Grimm-type glow discharge sources were constructed for excitation sources of atomic emission and mass spectrometry. Radio-frequency discharge was used for the excitation of nonconducting materials. Atomic emission and mass spectra of sintered ceramics (alumina, zirconia and silicon nitride) were measured under various operating conditions, and the effects of parameters such as rf power, gas pressure and sample thickness on the spectra were studied.
