Summary: | Caprine arthritis-encephalitis virus was isolated by explant cultures of carpal synovial membranes and lung from 7 goats clinically affected with the arthritic, neurologic and pneumonic forms either singly or in combination; antibody was detected in 5 by gel immunodiffusion precipitin (GDP). GDP revealed serum antibody in about one-third of 2708 goats, in 82 percent of 115 herds. Prevalence was significantly lower in Saanen than in other dairy breeds, and was markedly lowest in Angora goats; it was slightly higher in males than in females. Among seropositive goats, 85 percent were clinically normal. Of 280 clinically affected goats tested, only 42 percent had detectable antibody. One of 5 sheep that had been kept with infected goats had antibody. |
