Summary:Cu doped ZnO microballs were synthesized via oxalate assisted sonochemical route by using Zn(NO3)2 and Cu(NO3)2 as precursors. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis results demonstrate several nanosheets-like structures assembled to form microballs of 2–4μm diameters. Room-temperature photoluminescence spectra (PL) show near band emission centered at ~390nm. Absorbance spectra reveal red shift towards UV region on incorporation of Cu in ZnO. The as-synthesized products with extended light absorption exhibits excellent sunlight driven photodegradation ability towards Methylene blue (MB) and Rhodamine B (RhB) dyes.
