Summary: | Glucose metabolism in gastric cancer cells differsfrom that of normal epithelial cells. Upregulatedaerobic glycolysis (Warburg effect) in gastric cancermeeting the demands of cell proliferation is associatedwith genetic mutations, epigenetic modification andproteomic alteration. Understanding the mechanisms ofaerobic glycolysis may contribute to our knowledge ofgastric carcinogenesis. Metabolomic studies offer novel, convenient and practical tools in the search for newbiomarkers for early detection, diagnosis, prognosis, and chemosensitivity prediction of gastric cancer.Interfering with the process of glycolysis in cancercells may provide a new and promising therapeuticstrategy for gastric cancer. In this article, we presenta brief review of recent studies of glucose metabolismin gastric cancer, with primary focus on the clinicalapplications of new biomarkers and their potentialtherapeutic role in gastric cancer. |
