Summary:Within the Northern hemisphere climate-Processes land-surface Experiment (NOPEX) region of central Sweden, the occurrence of mires was used as field data to test the ability of various topographic indices to predict the wetness pattern. Two areas with contrasting topography were selected. Four indices were evaluated: TOPMODEL index, slope of the ground surface, modified TOPMODEL index, and drainage efficiency index. Results showed that topographic indices calculated from commercially available elevation data did not describe the wetness pattern in the low-relief catchment, due to problems with the spatial resolution.
