Summary:A new control method was developed, which ensures that an adequate constant power is supplied to electric rolling stock, while a storage unit is kept at a middle state of charge for subsequent powering or regenerating phases. A prototype storage system, applying the developed control method and employing electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs) as the storage unit, was built. Tests were performed using a railway test line and electric rolling stock, and it was confirmed that the system could charge or discharge according to powering/regenerating of electric rolling stock.
