Summary:A specialty conference on water reuse was sponsored by the Water Environment Federation (WEF). Proceedings from the conference contain papers covering a wide variety of water reclamation and reuse issues (Proc. WEF, 1997a). Proceedings from annual conferences sponsored by the WEF, the American Water Works Association (AWWA), and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) also included several papers on water reuse. Many individual papers from these conferences are cited in this review. Current overviews of the field of water reuse were presented, including a summary of health-related issues and an overview of Hawaiian water reuse projects. A general description of observed and documented international practices in water reuse toward the close of the 20th century indicates worldwide trends that appear to be in the direction of greater use of this resource. Williams (1997) visited water reclamation sites in South Africa, Namibia, England, and the USA and found widespread community acceptance for those projects.
