Highlights ► Mn induces DAergic cells injury and upregulation of p21 expression in vivo . ► Mn up-regulates both mRNA and protein levels of p21 in PC12 cells. ► p21 plays a pivotal role in Mn-induced loss of cell viability and G2/M arrest. ► Mn does not stabilize the p21 protein and mRNA in PC12 cells. ► The induction of p21 by Mn occurs at the transcriptional level.
