Summary:The fundamental characteristics of a twin electrochemical detector were evaluated to investigate its suitability as a detector for high-performance liquid chromatography. This novel detector was proved to have the following advantages compared to the conventional three-electrode detector. 1) Simultaneous determination of reduced and oxidized species is possible, 2) the stability of the electrode is improved by applying a larger potential to the other electrode, 3) the specificity of detection is improved by the re-electrolysis at the second electrode of the reaction product produced at the first electrode, and 4) specific detection of the post-discharging materials and sensitive detection are possible by using appropriate operating circuits.
