Summary: | The two reservoir water samples from Xinlicheng (SW1) and Shitoukoumen (SW2) were collected to investigate the characterization of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and trihalomethanes formation potential (THMFP). The six organic fractions were, hydrophilic acid fraction (HPIA), hydrophilic base fraction (HPIB), hydrophilic neutral fraction (HPIN), hydrophobic acid fraction (HPOA), hydrophobic base fraction (HPOB), and hydrophobic neutral fraction (HPON), separated with the XAD‐16, AG‐MP‐50, and WA‐10 resins. The DOM chemical composition sequences and specific THMFP of the six organic fractions in two raw waters are different. The experimental results show that HPOB in SW1 and HPOA in SW2 are the main precursor of THMFP among the six organic fractions. However, HPIB exhibits the highest chlorination activity in forming THMs. It is also found that the value of FI/DOC and the THMFP have better positive correlation. Compared with former results, a part of these findings are different from some reports. It is implied that certain sourcewater has a unique nature of DOM and DBPs. © 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 2010 |
