Highlights • Mexican populations have high frequencies of the DRD2 / ANNK1 A1 allele. • Native Amerindians have the highest prevalence of the DRD2/ANNK1 A1 allele globally. • The DRD2/ANKK1 A1A1 genotype is associated with heavy alcohol drinking in Mestizos. • A genetic background is involved in alcohol consumption among Mexicans.
