Summary: | Scurvy nowadays is an epidemic disease in underdeveloped areas of the world, where poverty, wars, and great migrations are producing situations of malnutrition. It is a rare disease in developed countries and appears sporadically: in the elderly who live alone, sometimes associated with chronic alcoholism, in infants with prolonged artificial feeding without a complementary diet, and in a miscellaneous group of patients with unusual diets, some of whom have psychiatric problems (6). It is exceptional in teenagers and adolescents because it requires a very prolonged diet without fruits and vegetables. Our patient is an adolescent who developed scurvy in its classic adult form. We have found only two references to this disease in this group of patients in developed countries in the last 10 years. We regard the adolescence as a period of greater risk due to the frequency of behavioral nutritional problems |
