Summary:We investigated sources of errors in gravimetric and combined spectral–gravimetric methods for the determination of platinum and palladium in multicomponent materials. A general methodological approach is proposed to the development of precise combined procedures for determining platinum and palladium in materials of complex composition. Procedures for the spectral–gravimetric determination of platinum and palladium in industrial preconcentrates with a weight fraction of platinum of 70–90% and palladium of 45–80% are developed and their performance characteristics are evaluated: the error ranges (±Δ, wt %) are 0.15–0.20 for platinum and 0.20–0.30 for palladium, which is not inferior and, in some cases, superior to the accuracy of conventional gravimetric analysis. The proposed procedures are less cumbersome and time consuming compared to the multistage gravimetric analysis.
